“It’s not what you know. It’s who you know.”
You’ve heard this phrase before. It’s repeated often to college students and career professionals alike…
Because it’s pretty darn true in the corporate world.
Plenty of people land jobs ahead of those with more qualifications simply by knowing someone. Maybe that’s how you landed a job or two in the past.
Business is the same way. Forging relationships with others brings you new customers and strengthens bonds with existing ones.
But the benefits of networking and developing these relationships go beyond job opportunities or new customers — especially if you’re a trader.
Let me illustrate with a quote from famed motivational speaker Jim Rohn:
“You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.”
What he means is obvious but powerful: those you allow close to you heavily influence who you are and what you do.
If you surround yourself with complainers, talkers, and negative people, you’ll slowly adopt their ways. They’ll drag you down to their level. You’ll feel the social pressure to hold back so you can fit in with them.
But if you develop relationships with people who love to achieve and win, you’ll feel an urge to strive for the same.
That’s why, every morning, I communicate with a small group of professional traders around the world. We discuss our trades, talk about marketing happenings, and share ideas.
Being part of this little group “pressures” me to work hard and make money trading…
But it also lets me pick the brains of other intelligent people in my field. Getting outside perspectives from professional peers keeps the mind sharp, keeps trading fun, and keeps you winning.
After all, I may know what I’m doing… but there’s always more to learn from others.
Speaking of learning from others that love to achieve...
